Vineyard Notes
2024 was another unique vintage in Virginia. We dodged a couple of frost warnings early on. Had above average rain fall in April, then things dried out and temperatures got quite hot for extended periods. The vines showed some stress late in the season due to the intense heat and drought conditions. At Capstone we realized high sugar and acid accumulation. The fruit came in ripe this year, and the resulting wines are delightful.
Production Notes
The Rose was made with 100% Merlot. The fruit was chilled over night and gently whole cluster pressed. We stabulated the juice for 4 days then racked it to fermentor. Wine was aged in stainless steel for 3 months and bottled.
Winemaker Notes
2024 produced strong, structured wines that exhibit a more New World feel. We needed to watch extraction in the cellar this year so we fermented our whites a bit warmer to blow off some of the more intense aromatics and we fermented our reds a bit cooler with fewer punch downs and pumpovers to mitigate tannin extraction. The wines are shaping up beautifully. This is an age worthy vintage.
